SLO Hair length is one of the most important morphological traits in many dog breeds. Differences in coat length are visible in various dog breeds, but for some, the breed standard allows only one coat length. In some breeds, long or short variant is inacceptable. One such example is Pembroke Welsh Corgis where longhaired dogs (also called "fluffies") are inacceptable.

In our lab, we test 2 different mutations on the FGF5 gene responsible for hair length. The c.284G> T mutation is responsible for hair length in many dog breeds, and the c.578C> T mutation occurs in dogs of the Akita, Siberian Husky, and Samoyed breeds.
